You’ll have to read to the end to see the deal!
As many of you know, I’ve been working on my book, “My Adoption Life: Living with a Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) Child.” In case any of my readers don’t know what RAD is, it’s a diagnosis given to a child that has experienced early childhood trauma.
No one likes to think this happens or that it can be a lifelong issue, but it does and it is. Just ask me, I’ve been dealing with my daughter, Kara’s issues for over 40 years.
Just the other day, I received a call from one of Kara’s son’s ex-wives. She has a child by him and wanted to know more information about where Kara came from so she could tell her child.
I think this part of my life will continue until I’m meeting my maker. It’s something I live with. It’s also true for other parents of RAD kids who live with this forever.
Many times parents of RAD kids are raising their grandchildren. Children’s Service Society of Utah (CSS-Utah) has a program that assists grand-families who are raising the children whose parents have lost custody of them.
CSS-Utah helps all types of family situations, not just RAD kids’ parents. I think this is a great idea and believe every state should have a program like this run by a private agency. I salute this agency all the time. They are amazing!
For the last 11 years I have been the social worker on Wasatch International Adoption Agency’s 2nd Chance for Kids program. We offer help to families who have reached their limits dealing with their RAD kid’s behaviors. If you or someone you know has questions about this program, you can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
